I was going to do a series, but it just didn't feel like there was enough here to have a letter to each one be a post on its own. There's one for each boy, who at one time or another, was a part of my life. I'm sure I'll be called dramatic when I say I left a piece of myself with them, but I like to think I did. As they did with me as well. A relationship is a bond, a sharing of experiences and emotions. You learn from every relationship you have, romantic or otherwise. I hope I left a piece of myself with them, and I hope it's overall, good.
I'll be writing these letters in reverse order, most recent first, and skipping anything that wasn't officially decided to be a relationship. That leaves me with five. Here goes nothing..

Number Five, from the start you were a mistake. Not your fault though. I needed a friend, and I put myself in a relationship. I wasn't ready for it, but I built one anyways. It was like trying to build a castle, without having a good foundation. Doomed to fall, and when it did, boy was it bad. It was my fault, most of the mess. I apologized as best I could. There wasn't more words I could say. In the end though, what you did, hurting in return for being hurt? I will forgive you, probably, one day. But I won't ever forget. We had good times. And I will look back on them with a smile. And I hope you do too. I hope you remember that I said you were a good guy. Because you are. You made a mistake, but people do that. You've got a world and a future ahead of you. Take that risk and try it all out. But don't let the awful get at you. You're better than it all. You've got a big heart, don't let the world turn it all to stone.

Number Four, Christ, what an end we had. Brutal, really. Our differences were hard. The must haves, neither one of us fit the other's. I am sorry I couldn't. But I wasn't willing to sacrifice what I had, who I am. I couldn't do that. If you're right, and the Big Man is real, you were a test for me. I learned a lot with you, especially in the end. I always feared I would cave and be what a man wanted me to be, that I would just have to live my life pretending someone who I'm not. I'm very happy that I was able to learn that I wouldn't be a farce, I am sad we had to separate the way we did for me to learn it. I'll be honest, I do harbor a few negative feelings towards you, but overall, we had a good run. Short, but good. I do hope you find the girl you're looking for and are happy in the end.

Number Three, I almost didn't include you in the list. We dated for a very short time, but I learned a surprising amount with you. I learned what a relationship ought to be, after a period of time I still think of as the dark times. You brought friendship into my definition of a relationship, something that I had forgotten up until that point. I also learned what it's like to be ghosted, so I'm still pretty damn peeved about that, thanks no thanks. Like I said, we were together for a minute, so there isn't much I can say. I just hope that if you ever, in some wild chance, read this, you'll know that you did have a good impact on me, and I learned a surprising amount from you, even in such a short time.

Number Two, you were my first for a lot of things. I'm sorry to say that I learned the most from our break up, but I did. One of my firsts that you were, was my first ugly heartbreak. I learned so, so much from that. I definitely was way more into the relationship than you were, not that it was your fault. When it ended, it ended ugly and it hurt. And for a good while too. The biggest lesson I learned from our break up though, wallowing won't help. You just have to get up, and force yourself to function. Don't mope, don't quit life, don't give up. Just have to get out of bed, shower, put on your favorite outfit, and get about life. You can eat Ben and Jerry's for all three meals that day, but the world doesn't stop, even when your world does. I learned to recover and to be brave from you. Even though I do hate you a teeny bit for breaking me like you did, I promise, I'm not still angry or upset over it. It's in the past, I've learned, and I've grown. I do hope you're doing okay now, and without too much detail, I hope your work hasn't gotten to you.

Number One. What can I say about you. As I write this, I'm in a bit of a strange place. We dated for a few months, spent two years confessing feelings, became friends again, and recently addressed what the deal is between us. And then I broke it all. Due to careless mistakes, I broke the trust we had. Two years together as friends, you were my best friend, and something I never took two seconds to think about knocked all of that to the ground. I learned heartbreak and friendship and strength and humility from the others, but with you, I learned what the songs mean. Yes it sounds a bit dramatic, but I'm a bit dramatic. And it all feels true. After the dust settled and we entered into our current situation, I had to sort out what I felt, because there was a lot. Among it all, there was a strange empty feeling. Like a gap. You had been such a constant in my life through so much, it's strange not to have that reliable constant around. What it felt like, and honestly still does, is like someone took a cookie cutter and pushed it through my chest and my lung. I can get by without it. But I would be better with it, I would be more successful, and happier, and more complete with it. Maybe that sounds weird, but it's  the only way I can really put it into words.

SO there you have it folks. Five short letters, to my five exes. It's all 100% honest, no nonsense, straightforward. It took a bit of soul bearing, but I think I've done well at covering it all without revealing anything much. It was a bit longer than I wanted, but stretching each one to a full post? It just wouldn't really work, you know? I'm off now to attempt to have a productive Sunday. Have a lovely one and until next time,

Coming to you from M, Personally

Long time no speak, right? I suck, I know! There's been a lot in the works on my end, and I promise, promise, promise, good things are coming!

I know this is two Real Talk posts in quick succession, but these kind of discussions just pop up when they want to, so I'm at the mercy of that. Don't worry, this one is gonna be much shorter than my Quarter Life Crisis post!

For the past few months, I've been pretty alone when it comes to the boyperson front. There's been a few dates now and again, but nothing too promising. That's really not a bad thing though. In the past few months I've also had to make some pretty big decisions in my life. Especially after my little crisis, I spent a lot of time focusing on myself. Which was really good for me. The other day, I was painting my shelves (as part of my Room Redo project), and with painting, comes thinking. Sometimes good, sometimes not so much. On this particular day, my mind started asking some questions, particularly two pretty heavy ones:

  • Am I ready for another relationship?
  • Do I need another relationship?
Taking this question by question, Am I ready for another relationship? To answer this, I looked to my mistakes in my past.
One of my biggest problems was that I was extremely dependent on the other person for way too much. When I was in or attempting to be in these relationships, I was not in a good place, mentally. I relied heavily on the person for my happiness. I don't mean that they made me happy, I mean if they weren't texting or snapping me that day, I was in a bad mood. They were the sole source of it for me. Which, in case you didn't know, is bad. Honestly, I was kind of creepy. Once I finally realized what I was doing and got yo the root of the problem, I've really fixed my behavior to be more, well, normal. I'm not always in the most perfect mental state, but I've learned to concentrate my happiness on myself and my actions more than anything else.
Another problem I had was that I have this constant feeling that I'm running out of time to do everything. I feel like I should already have my degree, and a well paying career, and be married, and be a football playing king in space by now. And I'm not even twenty years old. I know I have time, but sometimes my brain goes on the fritz and freaks out. Fixing this is kind of just impossible, I really just have to constantly remind myself to stop, breathe, and live in the moment. I'm starting to get to a more relaxed point now.
Those two are the big issues, anything else is just small potatoes. I've really grown from my mistakes and I've learned to be more, normal? If that's the right word? So am I ready to be in another relationship? I think so.

That leaves me with the harder question, Do I need another relationship?
On it's face, yeah it would be nice to have someone to share experiences with and spend time with, who doesn't like that? Thinking deeper, do I want to share so much of my energy and focus with someone else? It sounds so selfish, I know, but I've been on such a good streak lately. I've worked very very hard focusing all of energy on myself to out myself in a much better place than I was a year ago. It's not that I don't want to share all of my focus and energy, I'm afraid of risking everything I've worked to improve myself. I'm happy with who I have become. I love myself. Do I need another relationship? No. I don't.

That may leave a certain few of you wondering, okay, so what now?

As I wrote the first draft of this post, I planned to say that I wanted a relationship. Then I though need fit it better. Then I realized that I didn't want one in the capacity that need was synonymous with it. I hit the point in my writing where it hit me, I didn't need anyone to make myself happy. I am happy on my own. I am finally the happy independent, proud, funny girl who love herself for who she is. I don't need anyone to "complete me," hell, I complete me. And with that, I realized that I am ready to find someone who is my equal to spend time with and experience life with. Why? Because I realized that in a relationship not only do I give half, but I get half too. Both people put in to balance each other out.

So that's my little bit on relationships, and that's where I am now. Let me know what you think in the comments below, but until next time,

I struggled to write a post for Valentines Day. Being a holiday and all, I figured it deserves a special post.

See here's my problem though, I don't have anything to write about.
I'm not in a relationship, so there's no reason for me to write a sappy love post or describe the day I spent with my SO
I'm not at all about that hookup life, so I'll have no wild and crazy post-party night stories.
I'm not going out with friends, so no Galentine's day stories either.
And I'm not miserably single, so I can't even complain about that!

I'm happily single this year, which is a new thing for me. So I guess I am obliged to write about how I live my life as one of Queen Bey's Single Ladies. Which I will be playing and dancing to while writing this post, of course. So without further ado...

I mean I can't have a post about being a single lady without a Beyoncé gif.
(And for the record, my autocorrect has Beyoncé's name saved with the little accented e)

For the longest time I had craved a relationship. Looking back, I just wanted a person. Actually not a person. The person. My person. Which was a pretty selfish reason, to be honest.

I finally did find my person, though quite on accident. It was great between us for the time and I liked him a lot. Like, a lot. Unfortunately, it ended abruptly because of some outside difficulties. For example, the Atlantic Ocean. We ended it on good terms and still talk pretty regularly to this day. I know you're all dying to hear all the details, but it's that's a very long post that isn't coming in the foreseeable future. Some things I do like to keep anonymous.

But after him came another guy. Who was indeed on this side of the Earth. It was good with him, but it ended after four months. I was pretty broken up about it for a while, but looking back it probably was all for the best.

After him though, I went through a few month period that I now call the "dark days." Bad times, unfortunate guys, desperate emotional me, and a few too many (mis?) adventures. I don't look back on those months proudly.

But thanks to those awful few months, I learned a lot about life and about myself. I wrote The Boyfriend List. I gained a bit of confidence. I lost some self respect. Altogether, I grew a lot from that time, learned my lessons, and moved on into a better lifestyle with a better mindset.

Which brings us up to now, where I am happily single and, as A calls it, dating myself.

What does dating yourself entail? Well it means whatever you want it to really. Dating yourself really comes down to you taking some time to find yourself and learn to love yourself. It's easier said than done at first. It's taken me a while to fully understand what it meant to 'date myself'.

So now that I am in the one-girl relationship, what are my plans for this big V-day? Well that is a very good question that I don't completely know the answer to. Probably a lot of reading, I'm in the midst of Sense and Sensibility, just getting into the good parts now. I also want to try a new cookie recipe from Carly at TCP. I've heard a lot of rave reviews of her mom's recipe and I've just got to try it! After cookies and reading, I'm going to a late night showing of Deadpool with a few friends, because we pick only the most romantic films to see.

Who knows, maybe I will have a wild Sunday anyways. If anything exciting happens, you all will certainly be the first to know!

Until next time, have a wonderful Valentine's Day, from me and Liz Lemon

After many rather disappointing dates and a couple of rough breakups, I’ve made some decisions in my life regarding boys. At the moment, I’m going to be sticking to dating myself, as I’m pretty fabulous, if I do say so myself. But from here on out, all boys have to fit within certain standards to even be considered as dateable. I have settled a few times and I’m tired of it. I won’t settle for mediocre when I know I deserve way better. So here is where I’m going to detail out the perfect guy. I don’t expect every guy to fit every standard on here. But he has to score pretty high on this list to get a date. There are a few that are a bit more important than others though.

The Mandatories:

1.       Taller Than Me: It’s a very simple one, but I just can’t date a guy who is shorter than me. It just seems weird. I’m not very tall, so it’s not too tall of an order to fill (pun very much intended). I just want to be able to wear a good pair of heels when I’m with him. I’m about 5’7, so I’m looking for someone around 5’10. I’m happy with average height. Just someone to get the cereal off the top shelf in the grocery store really.

2.      Appreciation for Cowl Neck Sweaters: Okay it sounds totally silly I know, but hear me out on this one. I love cowl neck sweaters because they’re super warm, they almost come with a built in scarf, they’re super cute, and great to layer. A guy who appreciates (and wears) cowl neck sweaters has enough style to match my low key preppy. Now the thin ice here is that he might be just too stylish for me and surpass my low key preppy-ness. But I’ll cross that bridge if and when I get there.

3.       Willingness to be First Gentleman: This one is a two-parter, so here goes:

a.       First of all, I’ve got big goals. I want to be president one day. It might not happen. But I need someone in my life who is going to encourage and support my dreams and what I want to do, regardless of where it takes me. I also need him to know that my goals are just as valid as his, and I generally won’t put set my life and future aside for his alone.

b.      Second of all, I’m not dating for the heck of it any more. I’m dating for the future. No I don’t expect to find my future husband tomorrow, but it’s time I start looking at it seriously. I want the guys I’m dating to have some husband potential. I’m graduating college in two and a half years and I’ll be 21. I want to be married or at least engaged before I’m 24. I’ve got 5 years to find my person, that doesn’t leave any time to waste with nobody’s.

So the rest of the rules on the Boyfriend List are just very important things to consider. Some are more important that others, in no specific order.

1.      Loves His Mother: The way a guy treats his mother is a reflection of how he will treat you. Simple as that.

2.       Republican: Not a mandatory thing, but it certainly would make election years a lot easier.

3.      Politically Aware: He doesn’t have to be as big into politics as I am, but I do expect him to be aware and literate of what’s going on in the political sphere.

4.      Religious: I know, its weird coming from an atheist like me, but I’d like a guy who’s a little bit religious. If he’s very religious, it would be uncomfortable for the both of us. I just think a guy raised with religion in his life usually (not always!) has a bit better morals than others.

5.      Musical: No shame here, musical guys are pretty attractive. Whether it’s an instrument or singing (preferably both?), it’s always good.

6.     Literature Nerd: I like books. A lot. And he better understand that I prefer my books to him. Not that he isn’t great and all. But books. I also want to be able to converse and discuss books and what we’re reading. Reading a book together is a whole new level of connecting and I need that.

7.      Likes Horses: He doesn’t have to love them. He just has to like them enough to accept the fact that his new part time job involves being a water boy and camera man at horse shows. Chances are, he’ll get a horse at some point too. If he’s willing to learn to ride, even just a little, it makes him perfect in my book.

8.      A Little Bit Nerdy: I don’t want him to judge me when I sit and babble on about theories for the next Avengers movie. I want to be able to talk about the next season of Sherlock and when we’re leaving for the midnight release of our favorite video game. I want to play Skyrim some nights and Mario Kart on others. That being said, there is a very thin line between being the low key nerd I am looking for, and then just taking it too far. I have to proceed with caution.

9.      Can Cook: Not a skill I have yet acquired. I don’t need gourmet chef, but preferably better at cooking than me. The only thing he has to be really good at is breakfast in bed, mainly eggs over medium with an English muffin.

10.   Good at Shoulder Massages: Now wait a minute, before you go judging me on this one, I have a legitimate reason! With two bad shoulders and a microtear in my muscles, my shoulders get super achy sometimes, especially this time of year! I just need someone who can help a little bit on that front.

11.   Fit/Athletic: I want someone who’s in shape. I don’t want someone who looks like a balloon animal because he’s so ripped. Not a fan. That being said, I’m not a fan of the Dadbod either. I like somewhere in between. Works out pretty regularly and eats generally healthy-ish, but still looks like a normal person. That being said, I wouldn’t mind someone who can keep up with me on long runs. I’m training for the 2016 Marine Corps Marathon, and I want to keep running for the foreseeable future. While he doesn’t necessarily have to be a marathon runner too, I would like a buddy for short or easy run days. Plus, someone who’s willing to massage muscle knots out and bring me post marathon ice cream is always good.

12.  Has Goals: Another pretty self-explanatory one. I want a guy who’s going somewhere in life. I don’t want someone who’s content in a mediocre job making mediocre money. I want someone who is dedicated to his life and making it better.

13.  Inner Wanderlust: I have always wanted to travel, and no one likes to travel alone. I want a travel partner, someone to see the world with.

14.   Understands Introversion: It doesn’t so much matter if he’s an introvert, and extrovert, or an ambivert. As long as he understands that sometimes I might need a few hours of quiet reading and relaxation on my own, its fine by me.

15.  Well Off: Now before you go off calling me shallow for wanting to date someone who’s well off, let me start off by saying, yes I am a little shallow. But I’m not dating this person for their money. And I’m not looking to date a Rockefeller. I would just like someone who can afford to splurge a little for nice dinners occasionally and someone who wouldn’t think too much of spontaneous trips to the movies. I’m not asking for Mr. Moneybags, just someone who’s not going to bring home the extra lettuce from my dinner (yes it really happened and yes it was really weird).

16.   College Degree: Either has to have or be working towards a Bachelor’s degree at a minimum. And in a legitimate field, not like underwater sand shifting or something uselessly obscure. I’m not asking for a Ph.D candidate, but I won’t date someone who doesn’t see the value of a good education.

17.   No Silver Spoon Syndrome: I don’t necessarily want to date someone who was raised with the silver spoon. I don’t think I could connect with someone who was raised like that, as I never had that experience in my childhood.

That's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure as I think about it I'll remember some more that I want to add. I ought to get back to my homework now, oops!
