The Christmas season is upon us, folks! And I for one am very excited. I love everything about the holiday season. From the changing leaves in early November, to apple pies and turkey-roasted bacon on Thanksgiving, to the family Christmas parties, to sleeping with a spoon under my pillow on Christmas Eve. From November 1 to January 6th, I am the happiest little snowflake there ever could be! (except for finals week in the middle of that. Significantly less happy then)

And as per the annual tradition, I made my Christmas list! And yes, I am 19 and still making Christmas lists.

1. Portable Phone Charger: I don't know if it's just me or what, but my phone battery is CONSTANTLY dying. Maybe it's because Apple hates me, but if I'm out in the city, there's a pretty good chance my phone battery is on it's last legs. A portable charger is exactly what I need, espceially on nights when I'm coming home late from work, I get nervous if I don't have my phone available to me, just in case. As much as I love the Kate Spade chargers, it's pretty hard to willingly shell out $50, when I can get this super cute Dynex charger (in pink, of course!) from Best Buy for only $8.

2. Camp Socks: AKA the best foot sweaters around. If you don't own a pair of these magical socks, you are missing out on a serious part of your life. I honestly can't find a link, but I know for a fact that they have them at Target. And probably everywhere else too

3. Essie Polishes: I am huge on standing by favorite brands, and Essie is one of them I will always stick with. I've been happy with my polishes from them so far, and I don't plan on going back any time soon! I've been looking to add to my collection, and here's what I've narrowed it down to:
Marshmallow - just a little softer than Blanc, I like the sheerness
Dive Bar - Very different, but I LOVE the shimmer!
Borrowed & Blue - I don't have a pastel blue, and though it's not a color I use very often, it would be good to have on hand.       (pun 100% intended!)
Fiji - Always good to have a good, girly, pale pink!
Luxedo - I love dark polish, it makes me feel very elegant when I have it on. I've got a burgundy color, but I need a good plum too!
Turquoise & Caicos - Turquoise = perfection. I love wearing bright colors in the winter! It just cheers everything up really.
Big Spender - What can I say? I like pink. And I like when I have a polish that can match my lipstick!
Mint Candy Apple - Another nice turquoise color! Also, it's nearly Tiffany blue, therefore I need it!
Ballet Slippers - Basically the Essie go-to color. And I have yet to nab one for myself!
All in One or Good to Go - I'm almost out of top coat! I'm super harsh on my nails, so I definitely need a really good quality top coat to keep them presentable. These two are my preferred top coats from Essie

4. Black Watch Tartan Blanket Scarf: Featured everywhere, the blanket scarf is a beautiful invention. And I have an admitted love affair with Black Watch Tartan. I am in love with this one from The Providence Story on Etsy, but it sold out! I love the frayed end instead of the fringe, I prefer it for blanket scarves. Time to hunt down another producer..

5. Books: Books are never not on my list to be honest. While I'm generally happy with a Barnes & Noble gift card, sometimes it's nice to get a physical book as a gift. While I could list out every book I want, that would take until next Christmas before I even scraped the surface. The best general mass of my To-Read list is from my 101 in 1001 List. I do already own some books on the list, but most I haven't gotten my hands on yet! (especially Girl on the Train, which has a new movie coming out soon, just a suggestion Mom!)

6. Hair Straightener: As a girl with wildly misbehaving hair, my straightener and I have had a long and complicated relationship. After some rough patches in middle school, my straightener and I we're on a great road together. That is until last winter, when he began to give up on me. Now with occasional little shocks and turning off at will, it's time for me to give my straightener the viking funeral he deserves, and move on to someone new. I love my BioIonic straightener, and I want to stay loyal to the brand. I'm going on 5 years with mine now! But their 1 Inch StyleIron is $120, which is pretty pricey for me. If anyone is looking to splurge on a straightener, I would 100% recommend BioIonic though. On the budget side, my go-to-salon always uses John Frieda styling irons, and I'm willing to check out the Sleek Finish Flat Iron for myself!

7. Tortioseshell OR Silver Monogrammed Pendant Necklace: I can't decide, but I'm leaning more towards the silver monogrammed necklace. Essentially the main point of preppy college style, I do indeed feel the need to monogram everything. Because if it's not monogrammed, is it really even yours?

8. Running Shoes: I love my Nikes, but now that I'm starting my marathon training, I want to pick up a second, better fitting pair more suited for longer runs. My pair now are really great general sneakers and have worked great up to this point. But for my next pair, I need something with a little more arch support and something that's eventually going to last 26.2 miles with me! I've been leaning towards the Saucony Ride 8 and the Ravenna 6. The Asics Gel Nimbus 17 was suggested to me too, and I really like this use of Nimbus in the name, though there is unfortunately no Nimbus 2000. Despite my research, I think the best option for me would be to go into Brooks and ask the people who actually know about running shoes.

9. Silver Boyfriend Watch: My favorite Betsy Johnson watch kicked a few weeks back, so I've been in the market for another watch to replace it. As much as I loved the Betsy one, I'm looking for something a little more downplayed, something that has more outfit flexibility. I know I want silver, but I wouldn't mind a colored face with it I haven't found one I really like quite yet, but something similar to Fossil's Virginia watch would be good.

10. Hunter Boots: I love my hard working muck boots. They're great for the barn and working outside in the rain and mud. But when it's raining and I have class, I really cant stand wearing them. They're super heavy and not exactly pretty looking. I would love to have a pair of Hunter Rain Boots in my collection for class days. Functional, but still cute, and hopefully won't make that weird whump! noise when I walk.. My only problem with the boots is that I just can't decide between Hunter Green and Navy blue..

11. Le Pliage Longchamp Tote: Perfectly bottomless and sturdy, I can fit everything under the sun in this bag, and still have room for a book, need I even say more? I've always loved the La Pliage totes, and I think I always will. As a true lover of the color, Navy is the only option for me.

12. Duck Boots: According to the Farmer's Almanac, my spring semester is going to be very, very snowy. And as much as I love my big rain boots, they just don't cut it on winter style. I want something with a bit more of a cute factor when I'm wearing more layers that I thought I could fit under my coat. I might look a bit strange, but at least I'll have cute shoes! Of course the LL Bean Boots are my first favorites, nothing beats the original! I like the blue toe over the brown, it'll match 99% of everything I own. I also prefer the 8" over the 6", with the slush and gross all over, I'd rather have a bit more ankle coverage. There are few things worse than getting bits of snow down the top of your boots! The Sperry Saltwater Duckboot has a really nice darker leather on it and I really like the green or blue toe option. I tried on the Merona boots at Target this past weekend. While. closer to my price range, the ankle of the book was very uncomfortable to me, it really didn't have much of a shape. The jury is still out on the boots, but hopefully I'll decide on a pair soon.

13. Riding Boots: I get a new pair of boots every year and I don't know what I do, but they never last! I wear them a lot and I think I just beat them up. Here's to hoping that these ones last. I'm super picky about the zipper on some of them, I prefer the full zip, it's just easier to put on. I've got pretty large calves thanks to both riding and running, so not all boots fit me, especially the ones with super slim calves. And I hate ones with too many little buckles on them, they always catch on my jeans when I cross my legs. As a total fangirl, I'm obliged to include the most fabulous Meranda boot from Ralph Lauren. I love the dark brown color and the fab detail on the ankle. The Steve Madden Arries boot is great too.  I love the color, and it's super simple looking. AND no buckles! The third pair I found is the Anne Klein Kahlan boot. They are super dark brown, which I'm not sure if I want or not, but I love the high front on them!

14. Trench Coat: Always the best go to for the fall and spring. It's a wardrobe staple for pretty much any style and a good trench coat can last for a while! I've always wanted a Burberry trench coat, but $1,700 is a little out of my price range, even for an investment purchase! Though I usually prefer tan or khaki colored coats, this one is super cute in brown! And of course, you can never go wrong with Ralph Lauren, and I do like the little skirt detail on the bottom too. But this Calvin Klein one is much closer to my realistic price range and its the super classic look.

15. Knit Hats: It's not even that chilly out yet and I cannot wait to start wearing hats again! When I was younger I loved trapper hat, you know the ones with ear flaps. I liked to wear them when I would read. Don't ask, I haven't the slightest idea why. But since then, my hat style has changed from ear flaps to poms. I'm in love with the cute little knits with the pom pom on top, silly as they might look. My goal is to get a good collection of them this year and maybe even try to knit one for myself too!

16. Black Flats: While my LC blush flats are usually my go-to shoes, I need a good pain of plain black flats. I've got a suede pair with a slight heel, but I need one that I can just throw on when I'm going to do grocery shopping or going to class.

17. Cognac Flats: A cute stylish pair! Something between heels and go-to. To be honest, I have a love for all things cognac-colored, to be honest.

18. Blow Dryer: I have wavy and naturally rather poofy hair. Generally, blow dryers and I do not get along. After many sad attempts resulting in poof-helmets rivaling Albert Einstein, I had given up on dryers. Over the summer when I was running and showering nearly every morning, I could let my hair air dry on the way to work, and generally it would look okay. It's great now, since there's no humidity. But unfortunately that no humidity comes with a cost, its cold as all heck. And I don't really feel like walking into class with icicles in my hair. So that brings me here, to shopping for hair dryers. I know I wanted one with Diffuser and Concentrator tools, to control the airflow a bit. After shopping around I landed on two Revlon brand dryers: the Pro Stylist dryer and the Laser Brilliance Infrared dryer. I don't really have a particular preference for either, but the latter seems to have a bit more consistent reviews. Here's to hoping for fewer baseball cap mornings!

19. Gift Cards to J. Crew and LL Bean: Super self explanatory, I hate when people shop for me, because I always feel bad about returning or exchanging anything! With gift cards, it's less of a hassle for everyone really.

20. Bonus Booties: I found these guys when I was looking for the riding boots, and I fell in love! I usually don't wear shorter boots, but these are cute and hardy looking and would be good for the spring, just sturdy enough to be able to handle the little rain puddles and still cute enough for anything! They're insulated too, so they're perfect for the more chilly days, great for me to wear to work. I like the brown, but they come in black and chestnut too.

Writing all that out took MUCH longer than expected! But that's it folks, my Christmas list for this year! Until next time, Happy (early) Holidays!

-Writing to you from M, Personally

A super speedy post for today, my favorite items from the J. Crew sale! All pulled from the 50% off section, I chose pieces that I 100% need in my wardrobe, like, yesterday.

Inset Embellished Tank Top in Petal because it would look cute going to class with jeans and a cardigan or cute going to a meeting with slacks and a blazer.

Sleeveless Trench Jumpsuit in Olive Moss because lately I've been feeling the need to buy a jumpsuit. Not a clue where I would wear it, but I guess it's good to have on hand?

Reid Cone Denim Jean in Classic Rinse because plain and simple, none of my pants for me anymore! The downside to losing weight I guess. Also who doesn't love a dark wash denim?

Reid Cone Denim Jean in Resin Rinse because see above, change dark wash to SUPER dark wash.

Point Sur Hightower Straight Jean in Evansville Wash because I really want to find a pair of straight-leg jeans that fit me. This buy is more of a leap since I don't know how they would fit me. Big hips always make straight leg pants a bit risky. But I love the classic coloring and I need some pants!

Seville Metallic Espadrille Wedges in Metallic Silver because I really like silver and I really need a good pair of espadrilles for the summer!

Corsica Espadrille Wedges in Dusty Cypress because I need a pair of espadrilles that'll show off my summer-y colored DIY pedicure that I've mastered!

Relaxed Merino Wool Pullover Sweater in Heather Dove because I don't have a grey sweater and it's a great go to for fall and winter and even the spring! It's light enough to layer, and a really nice relaxed fit.

Patch-Pocket Sheath Dress in Tipped Linen because its just SUPER cute! I don't need any more dresses, but this gorgeous neutral means I can get a bright pair of shoes to wear with it! Though I can hear my mother in the back of my mind scolding me for wearing too many boring colors..

Shiny Downtown Field Puffer Jacket because I really like it in Spiced Nutmeg. I don't have a brown jacket with me this year, and this coat looks like it's just enough for the recently warm November days (what even is the weather lately anyways??).

Liza Dress in Slub Silk in Celestial Blue because just look at it! It's beautiful! The neckline and the waist are both very flattering to my shape, and even though it's sleeveless, the cobalt color is amazing for the winter. And side note, the cobalt color also looks really nice with my coloring too.

Georgie Suede Tassel Loafers in Kraft Brown because they've got tassels. That really the only reason I can think of right now.

Collection Featherweight Cashmere Long-Sleeve T-Shirt because one, I really want a nice cashmere sweater and two, I love the cut and style that this one comes in. I didn't specify a color, because I kind of want them all to be honest, but if I had to pick, it'd be the Landscape Green!

Dulci Suede Kitten Heels because I need a good pair of Kitten Heels. And also PINK! Okay technically they're neon orchid. Regardless, I LOVE the color!!

Calf Hair Crepe Loafers because I have a pair of smoking slipper-esque flats in leopard, but these are a more casual pair. So obviously, I need these too!

Favorite Shirt in Stripe in True Blue because none of my button downs fit quite right any more. I need my good 10-minute-morning go to shirt AND I need a good button down for more formal business-y outfits too.

Now that I've finished speed-shopping through J. Crew's sale, time to go beg the 'rents for some early Christmas shopping!

After many rather disappointing dates and a couple of rough breakups, I’ve made some decisions in my life regarding boys. At the moment, I’m going to be sticking to dating myself, as I’m pretty fabulous, if I do say so myself. But from here on out, all boys have to fit within certain standards to even be considered as dateable. I have settled a few times and I’m tired of it. I won’t settle for mediocre when I know I deserve way better. So here is where I’m going to detail out the perfect guy. I don’t expect every guy to fit every standard on here. But he has to score pretty high on this list to get a date. There are a few that are a bit more important than others though.

The Mandatories:

1.       Taller Than Me: It’s a very simple one, but I just can’t date a guy who is shorter than me. It just seems weird. I’m not very tall, so it’s not too tall of an order to fill (pun very much intended). I just want to be able to wear a good pair of heels when I’m with him. I’m about 5’7, so I’m looking for someone around 5’10. I’m happy with average height. Just someone to get the cereal off the top shelf in the grocery store really.

2.      Appreciation for Cowl Neck Sweaters: Okay it sounds totally silly I know, but hear me out on this one. I love cowl neck sweaters because they’re super warm, they almost come with a built in scarf, they’re super cute, and great to layer. A guy who appreciates (and wears) cowl neck sweaters has enough style to match my low key preppy. Now the thin ice here is that he might be just too stylish for me and surpass my low key preppy-ness. But I’ll cross that bridge if and when I get there.

3.       Willingness to be First Gentleman: This one is a two-parter, so here goes:

a.       First of all, I’ve got big goals. I want to be president one day. It might not happen. But I need someone in my life who is going to encourage and support my dreams and what I want to do, regardless of where it takes me. I also need him to know that my goals are just as valid as his, and I generally won’t put set my life and future aside for his alone.

b.      Second of all, I’m not dating for the heck of it any more. I’m dating for the future. No I don’t expect to find my future husband tomorrow, but it’s time I start looking at it seriously. I want the guys I’m dating to have some husband potential. I’m graduating college in two and a half years and I’ll be 21. I want to be married or at least engaged before I’m 24. I’ve got 5 years to find my person, that doesn’t leave any time to waste with nobody’s.

So the rest of the rules on the Boyfriend List are just very important things to consider. Some are more important that others, in no specific order.

1.      Loves His Mother: The way a guy treats his mother is a reflection of how he will treat you. Simple as that.

2.       Republican: Not a mandatory thing, but it certainly would make election years a lot easier.

3.      Politically Aware: He doesn’t have to be as big into politics as I am, but I do expect him to be aware and literate of what’s going on in the political sphere.

4.      Religious: I know, its weird coming from an atheist like me, but I’d like a guy who’s a little bit religious. If he’s very religious, it would be uncomfortable for the both of us. I just think a guy raised with religion in his life usually (not always!) has a bit better morals than others.

5.      Musical: No shame here, musical guys are pretty attractive. Whether it’s an instrument or singing (preferably both?), it’s always good.

6.     Literature Nerd: I like books. A lot. And he better understand that I prefer my books to him. Not that he isn’t great and all. But books. I also want to be able to converse and discuss books and what we’re reading. Reading a book together is a whole new level of connecting and I need that.

7.      Likes Horses: He doesn’t have to love them. He just has to like them enough to accept the fact that his new part time job involves being a water boy and camera man at horse shows. Chances are, he’ll get a horse at some point too. If he’s willing to learn to ride, even just a little, it makes him perfect in my book.

8.      A Little Bit Nerdy: I don’t want him to judge me when I sit and babble on about theories for the next Avengers movie. I want to be able to talk about the next season of Sherlock and when we’re leaving for the midnight release of our favorite video game. I want to play Skyrim some nights and Mario Kart on others. That being said, there is a very thin line between being the low key nerd I am looking for, and then just taking it too far. I have to proceed with caution.

9.      Can Cook: Not a skill I have yet acquired. I don’t need gourmet chef, but preferably better at cooking than me. The only thing he has to be really good at is breakfast in bed, mainly eggs over medium with an English muffin.

10.   Good at Shoulder Massages: Now wait a minute, before you go judging me on this one, I have a legitimate reason! With two bad shoulders and a microtear in my muscles, my shoulders get super achy sometimes, especially this time of year! I just need someone who can help a little bit on that front.

11.   Fit/Athletic: I want someone who’s in shape. I don’t want someone who looks like a balloon animal because he’s so ripped. Not a fan. That being said, I’m not a fan of the Dadbod either. I like somewhere in between. Works out pretty regularly and eats generally healthy-ish, but still looks like a normal person. That being said, I wouldn’t mind someone who can keep up with me on long runs. I’m training for the 2016 Marine Corps Marathon, and I want to keep running for the foreseeable future. While he doesn’t necessarily have to be a marathon runner too, I would like a buddy for short or easy run days. Plus, someone who’s willing to massage muscle knots out and bring me post marathon ice cream is always good.

12.  Has Goals: Another pretty self-explanatory one. I want a guy who’s going somewhere in life. I don’t want someone who’s content in a mediocre job making mediocre money. I want someone who is dedicated to his life and making it better.

13.  Inner Wanderlust: I have always wanted to travel, and no one likes to travel alone. I want a travel partner, someone to see the world with.

14.   Understands Introversion: It doesn’t so much matter if he’s an introvert, and extrovert, or an ambivert. As long as he understands that sometimes I might need a few hours of quiet reading and relaxation on my own, its fine by me.

15.  Well Off: Now before you go off calling me shallow for wanting to date someone who’s well off, let me start off by saying, yes I am a little shallow. But I’m not dating this person for their money. And I’m not looking to date a Rockefeller. I would just like someone who can afford to splurge a little for nice dinners occasionally and someone who wouldn’t think too much of spontaneous trips to the movies. I’m not asking for Mr. Moneybags, just someone who’s not going to bring home the extra lettuce from my dinner (yes it really happened and yes it was really weird).

16.   College Degree: Either has to have or be working towards a Bachelor’s degree at a minimum. And in a legitimate field, not like underwater sand shifting or something uselessly obscure. I’m not asking for a Ph.D candidate, but I won’t date someone who doesn’t see the value of a good education.

17.   No Silver Spoon Syndrome: I don’t necessarily want to date someone who was raised with the silver spoon. I don’t think I could connect with someone who was raised like that, as I never had that experience in my childhood.

That's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure as I think about it I'll remember some more that I want to add. I ought to get back to my homework now, oops!

Writing to you from M, Personally

This past week I had the pleasure of viewing Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. At least, I think I did. I'm not entirely sure that it was a movie and I wasn't just suffering from a slightly sleep-deprived delusion.

The film begins with us watching the main character, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey), waking up. Oddly comforting/neutrally happy music plays as Joel sits up, kicks off his sheets, and stares at himself looking absolutely perplexed with his choice of matching green pajamas. At least we're all in the same confused boat, right?

Other than that, Joel begins what most would consider a rather boring Valentine's Day morning, describing himself as woken up in "a funk" when he spontaneously takes a train to Montauk. He writes about his trip in his journal, his first entry in two years.

While in Montauk, Joel sees a girl on the beach, and later she sparks a conversation with him on the train. As they keep talking, Joel's general neutral personality seems to clash with this mystery girl's strange, colorful personality mirrored by her hair. As viewers, we automatically assume that this girl, introducing herself as Clementine (Kate Winslet), is the love interest for Joel. Which seems strange at first, since they are obviously very different people, but we are so accustomed to this boy meets girl happily-ever-after trend in movies, we think nothing of their assumed soon-to-be budding romance.

Later, Joel sees Clem and offers to drive her home. After a bit of awkward conversation, Joel joins Clem for a drink in her apartment. The two drink and talk for a while. Before Joel leaves, Clem gives him her number asking him to call. The set up a date for the next night, going out to a frozen lake. They spend the night together, and Clem asks to stay at Joel’s house. When he says yes, she runs inside to grab her toothbrush. A man knocks on Joel’s window asking him a few questions and the scene fades away as Joel waits.

After a nearly 18 minute introduction, the credits start onscreen as we see Joel crying in his car with a sad song playing in the background. The song ends as he pulls the tape from the deck, and the music is replaced with a quizzical-sounding tune that sounds like a combination of Flight of the Bumblebee and the Jeopardy theme.

And so begins the confusion.

From this point on, the film begins to jump around from the day before Valentine’s Day, to three days before. We learn of Joel and Clem’s break up and the infamous Lacuna Inc. At this point, in the film we see Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) for the second time, but actually meet them for the first. We are also introduced to Mary (Kristen Dunst) and Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). At Lacuna, we learn that Clementine had Joel erased from her memory. Joel quickly decides to have Clementine removed from his from memory too.

The scenes begin to flash around and as Joel’s memories are being erased, starting from the most recent. As he progresses though, Joel changes his mind, wanting to save some of the better memories he had of him and Clem.

I have to stop here at serious risk of spoiling the film.

The film really delves into the post-break-up emotions in a way that hasn't really be done before. The idea of erasing the memory of your significant other is an idea that has probably been appealing to a lot of people at one point or another. Eternal Sunshine toys with the question of ‘it is really worth it?’ Which is the best cliffhanger I can give.

Eternal Sunshine is a movie that you either hated, or wanted to watch again. If you're looking for a film to add to your post-break up movie marathon between Dirty Dancing and First Wives Club, this is definitely not the one for you, no matter what Buzzfeed says.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for something to challenge the way you think. Eternal Sunshine really makes you question your beliefs, and when you watch it for the second or third time, it makes you question your senses. You begin to pick up on little details you ignored the first time. This is one of those movies that you could watch ten times, and find something new each time.

Before you watch, I have to tell a short story. I thought I would be proactive and take notes on the film so I would be able to write the review a bit easier. I quickly learned my lesson. The last thing I wrote was "Frodo's eyes upside down??" and at that point I made the executive decision that multitasking during this film just wasn't going to work. So let that be your warning, if you're going to watch this movie, actually watch it. I mean put the phone away, stop writing that report or whatever you're doing. Eternal Sunshine is a film that needs 100% of your attention. If you can dedicate this time, it's definitely worth it the fantastic confusion.

Fun Fact, this is pretty much word for word, the paper I just wrote. I know you usually have to get the prof's permission to double dip with some papers, but you think they're going to care about the blog? That'll be some really awkward explaining to the board if they catch me for "plagiarism." Does it count if you plagiarize yourself?
I'm gonna hope not!

On May 25th, after not reading for much of my freshman year, I was fed up and decided to challenge myself to read 101 books in 1001 days. Since then, I've made some pretty good progress, but there's still a ways to go!

Just Finished: Break Your Own Rules by Jill Flynn, Kathryn Heath, and Mary Davis Holt

So I'll be honest, this post has been a long time coming. I finished this book about a week ago, and this is the first time I had time to actually sit and write about it. And I'm glad I waited so I could give an accurate write up because I just cannot say enough about this book! The ladies of Flynn Heath Holt Leadership did a fantastic job of explaining what holds women back in their own minds. We as women have this mindset and these rules in our own heads what we so strictly follow. While not every woman is the same, but a lot are.
Even though it's meant for those in the business field, It can really be applied to anything. The book really helped me in terms of looking at my future political career and even just in my position with groups on campus. It asks questions and explains things in such a simple way, but without tearing you down or making your previous actions seem negative. It's such a fantastic read, I would 100% recommend it to ANYONE, and I already have recommended it to so many other amazing ladies!

Currently Reading: I'm not sure yet! I'm taking a break with Anna Karenina, It's just too big to drag around campus! I'll be sure to pick a new book out by Sunday, and I'll do a mini update then!
But for now, I'm off to the dining hall for dinner!

Today I am making a commitment to being happy.

Starting with these beautiful flowers I picked up at the local Farmers Market, I am going to have a great day today. First I'm going smile about the ingenuity of my makeshift vase, yes it is indeed my Contigo water bottle.

I am determined to stay positive today because the past 36 hours have just been, honestly, awful. I really just mentally need the next 24 hours to be good-ish. I'm not asking for great, I'm not asking for amazing. I'll be happy with slightly above average at this point.

I've got another slightly less hectic weekend ahead of me, hopefully filled with focused work, healthy food shopping, and if everything goes well, a rewarding trip to Target.

I really ought to get to sleep soon I guess.

As I sit here burrito-ed in blankets typing ceaselessly into the dark, I'm finishing up for now. I'll post again tomorrow evening to update you all on how my day went. Hopefully queuing up a few more posts for this week to make up for being MIA in my week of hell!

As we all get back into the swing of classes, it's always hard to bend a summer workout schedule AND a summer clean eating plan to fit a new school schedule. And even then it's hard to manage both schedules and not lose your motivation to workout! With my usual motivation currently abroad, lately I've had some trouble getting myself out to my runs, starting my body weight challenge workouts, and I haven't even made it to the gym once! So I figured I'd put together some fitspo for myself and for anyone who needs those extra reminders to get up and moving some days!

Before I start, I want to say that these are pictures that I find inspiring towards my fitness journey. Not everyone finds the same things inspiring! Just take that into account before you get too grumpy about it all :)

And on that fittie note, I'm off to do some homework and then go to my meetings for the day. And of course fitting in my run tonight, regardless of how tired I am or how hot it is! Always make your work out work!

Writing to you from M, Personally
You know, sometimes I with I was like a "normal" college student. Tonight is one of those nights.

I spent the Friday of my Labor Day weekend by myself. In my room. Alone. Not even my roommate was here, she has plans in New York all weekend.

I wish I was like the girls I saw when I was opening my window earlier. Dressed up. Wearing shoes that I won't walk home in. Getting into the frat's carpool. Getting drunk. Dancing. Having "the best nigh everr" (yes, with two r's).

I wish I was like my (rather communistic) neighbors across the hall. Casually drinking and debating with a couple friends.

I wish I was like my next door neighbors. Two roommates, close friends, staying up late talking and hanging out all night.

I wish I was like my roommate last year, hanging out with all these really cool foreigners and looking fabulously foreign-stylish all the time.

But at the same time, I'm glad I'm not doing that. Because none of that is me. I don't really enjoy that. Yes, I like to dance. Yes, I like talking about serious topics with friends. Yes, I wish I had a best friend with me at school. Yes, I wish I had a practically star-studded friend group. But I don't. And that's okay! I'm finding my group now. I'm finding my people. My niche on campus.

Right now though, right now I'm not so okay with it all. I think I'm just feeling kind of lonely. My best friend is back home. My good friends here are hanging out with other people. My roommate is away. And the beau is currently out of contact, as per his line of work often leads him to be.

I don't often find myself feeling especially lonely. Most of the time it's by choice. And I'm okay with that, when it is the case. But tonight, not so much. After marathoning most of the first season of The West Wing on Netflix and repainting my nails with a new-ish Julep color, Shari, I realized that I am quite lonely. There's few things worse than having to be alone when all you want is a friend.

Not even a best friend or a good friend. Just another person to share some conversation with occasionally, you know?

Though I'll be honest, I could really use a good hug from a certain boyperson right about now. Not specifying though. Not tonight at least.

I need a hug and a mug of tea. That's on my list for a target trip, a tea pot. Even though it's hot out. it was definitely a tea day today..

And in honor of that, I'll leave you with a stock photo of a sweater and a mug. Can you tell I'm ready for fall already?

Until next time,

Last fall, I was sort of an accidental intern. I sent an email to a company out of curiosity, thinking that no one would hire a first semester freshman with zero experience. Especially not for a paid internship! But lo and behold, there I was, a full course load and a 20 hour a week job! Without going too far into it all, it was a humbling experience to say the least! I am thankful for everything it taught me, and the connections that it has and will lead to in my future!

After that experience, plus a little time to grow, I'm ready to look for an internship for the spring. I need something that's only 2 or 3 days week, or else otherwise paid. Now with a new job sitting for a family, plus a heavy course load, plus a few extracurricular, and occasionally finding time for dinner, I've got more limited time. I also want something political, either a Hillternship or something in my future field, campaign management.

So here is your first bit of insight into the top-secret mission of looking for an internship. Here's how it goes down:

1. You begin to realize that, like, everyone has already had 9 internships, despite being first semester sophomores. The pressure begins, you gotta catch up!!

(Side Note: when I searched for a "panic gif" some how, I found a ton of Brendan Urie images. And it took a while before I realized why...)

2. The search begins.
     (a) You start with all the internship finder websites, but let's be honest, you can never find what you need there. I don't know. Maybe you can, but I certainly can't.

     (b) you just start to look for companies/firms/whatevers who might just have what your looking for.

3. A THOUSAND tabs later, you've got everything open, and three emails from your mom. You don't even remember telling her that you were looking for an internship, but she always know.

4. Before any emails or applications are sent, you gotta brush up that resume and LinkedIn profile.

5. Time to write out your cover letter AKA break out the creative writing skills.

6. Finally, you finish all of the emails. Now it's a hurry up and wait game for responses.

And that's about as far as I've gotten. Well I haven't even sent all my emails yet. That's tomorrows project! Per usual, I'll keep the masses updates! Until next time,

On May 25th, after not reading for much of my freshman year, I was fed up and decided to challenge myself to read 101 books in 1001 days. Since then, I've made some pretty good progress, but there's still a ways to go! Check out the master list here!

Just Finished: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling takes the reader on a trip through her psyche. It's great because it feels very personal and conversational, much like the way I write. You learn so much about her personal life and how she views everything. I loved the chapters discussing her body and how designers hate her size. Speaking as a fellow size 8, it's an awkward size to shop for. We're not skinny and gorgeous, we're not heavy and gorgeous, we're just hanging out in the middle, uncommitted to an extreme, living life with an elliptical and a pint of Ben &Jerry's.
Through Kaling's writing, I feel like I know enough to be her best friend. Honestly, she seems like she would be an awesome friend. Let me know girl, I'm always up for an online shopping marathon!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but I think that any almost-twenty-something or just-after-twenty-something woman would love it.

Currently Reading: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Yes, I am still reading this absolutely massive novel! It's a bit difficult to get through, based on the sheer size of it. It gets a little easier every time I crack it open. And as anyone who's every read any Russian literature know, the names are just insane sometimes. Lots of characters with 3 very complicated names, and a seemingly endless amount of nicknames. It's a process to read, but I'm fighting through!

In  the mean time, I'll keep reading, and you can add me on Goodreads to see what I'm reading and get updates when I finish a book!
